About

This books showcases the creative work by famed graphic designer Ivan Chermayeff, of New York design firm Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv. In his collages, envelopes or flattened-out boxes become faces, with stamps as eyes, an address line for a nose and a block of solid color for the mouth. The collages are at once collections of random objects and perfectly coherent compositions. Chermayeff describes his work as a "continuing investigation of making connections, of putting together disparate things and seeing other things than how they were intended. People have such a hard time visualizing the world. There's so much they don't see. By forcing them to recognize shapes and patterns, they really become aware of the world around them."
